PNP condemns Russia invasion of Ukraine

The People’s National Party (PNP), the opposition party, has condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and called on Prime Minister Andrew Holness to address the public on the crisis.

“We call for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of all Russian forces from the sovereign territory of Ukraine,” the PNP said in a statement.

The PNP said that this is crucial since some Jamaican students stay in Ukraine and the war has ramifications for the country.

The government has been accused by the party of being inefficient and heartless in dealing with the students’ issue.

The PNP is contending that because the US and its western allies have imposed sanctions on Russia, this could have negative consequences for Jamaica’s struggling bauxite and alumina industry, as one of the two remaining alumina refineries is controlled by Russians.

He said the PNP hopes that diplomatic engagement will continue to be pursued and that any further escalation of war will be prevented.
